W.G 'Dub' Garrard

Services for W.G. "Dub" Garrard, 76, of Itta Bena, who died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2004, at University Medical Center in Jackson of injuries sustained in an Oct 29 automobile accident at the intersection of US. 82 and Sunflower Road, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Greenwood Church of God.

Mr. Garrard was a retired welder and former owner of Garrard Welding Service in Itta Bena. He was born in Carroll County on Oct 21, 1928, one of eight children born to the late Levi Moses and Alma Teal Garrard. He learned the value of hard work at a young age and spent most of his youth helping to support his family,

He worked for Barrentine Manufacturing for a few years until he was able to start his own business in 1964. His son, Douglas "Dubby" Garrard, worked with his father in the business until his death in 1998. The two made a team that farmers, gin companies and truck companies from Memphis to Jackson knew they could make, repair and create anything with their hands.

Mr. Garrard was a charter member of the Greenwood Church of God, where he had been a Sunday School teacher and was very active in many of the church's activities. His family says that his role as husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend was a model of true Christian love.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son; a brother, Douglas W. Garrard; and a sister, Edna Garrard Gordon.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dorothy Jones Garrard of Itta Bena; two daughters, Dorothy Jean "Cissy" Kelly of Greenwood and Brenda Smith of Meridian; four sisters, Lucy Sproles, Estelle Ballard and Lorene Jackson, all of Greenwood, and Pauline Reid of Winona; one brother, Holman Garrard of Itta Bena; five grandchildren, Kimberly Smith of Meridian, Chad Garrard of Eupora, Joby G. Kelly of Carrollton, Dawn Black of Southaven and Kelly Spruill of Itta Bena; and eight great-grandchildren.

The Rev. James McElroy and James Kelly will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Centerville Cemetery in Carroll County.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Garrard, Chad Garrard, Joby Kelly, Paul Garrard, Brad Garrard and Charles Garrard.

Visitation will be from 6 until 8 this evening at Wilson & Knight Funeral Home.
