Nellie Ferebee Merrell, 87, of Grandy, NC died Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at Albemarle Hospital. Ms. Merrell was born on December 30, 1921 in Shawboro, NC to the late Mitchell Simmons Ferebee and Annie Lee Sears Ferebee and also the widow of St. Elmo-Elmer Merrell. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Grandy.
Ms. Merrell is survived by three daughters, Marie Old and husband E.W. of South Mills, NC, Kaye Lewis of Stevensville, MD, and Judy Brickhouse of Southern Shores, NC; two sons, Darrell Merrell and special friend Rebecca Fronius of Grandy, Michael Merrell and wife Pam of Grandy; one sister, Manie Grandy of Elizabeth City; 15 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter Louise Sawyer and two sons Carroll and Winfred ‘Bud’ Merrell.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, February 23, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC with Carl Krites officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the lobby of the funeral home and at other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Old, 167 Chamberlin Road, South Mills, NC. Twiford Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, is assisting the Merrell family.
