H. E. Alwes Sr., ex-clerk of p olice court, dies at 85
Hrold Edgar Alwes Sr., 85, a retired Louisville Police Court Clerk and a tax consultant and former assistant buiness agent for Operating Engineers Local 181, died at 1:55 a.m. yesterday at his home 4153 Sunset Ave.
(He actually passed away at General Hospital after suffering a stroke on February 4, he suffered the stroke at his home)
He was active in Republican politics in his younger years and was the GOP candidate for the 12th Ward Alderman in 1955. He also was a past president of the 1st5 and 12th Ward Republican Clubs.
He served as Police Court clerk the early 1960's under Judge William G. Colson.
Alwes also ran a grocery store several years ago and at one time operated a company that manufactured vinegar, blueing and extracts.
He was a native of New Albany.
Alwes was a member of Honest Abe Council 109, Junior Order of the United American Mechanics and was secretary of the lodge for 55 years. He also was a past state and national officer of the organization. He also was a member of the West Broadway Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Willialm H.l Alwes, a retired city policeman, Harold E. Jr. and Donald R. Alwes Sr. four dauthers, Mrs. Elizabeth Wallace Mrs. Minnie Becker, Mrs. Lillian Chavis, and Mrs. Virginia Hayes; 23 grandchildren.
The funerl will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Owen Funeral Home, 5317 Dixie Highway, with burial in Evergreen Cemetery.
