ALWES, DONALD RAY, 78, of Louisville, passed away Monday, July 5, 2010.

He was a retired school teacher and administrator for the Jefferson Co. Board of Education. He taught at Valley High School from 1957 to 1968, then later was the director of the Re-Ed program for the county school system until retiring in 1987. After retiring, he emjoyed spending his summers at Kentucky Lake.

He was a member of South Jefferson Baptist Church and the Gideons International. He attended bible study at Southeast Christian Church and when in Benton, KY, he attended First Baptist Church.

Mr. Alwes was an officer for the US Army, having served with the 138th Field Artillery as well as the 100th Division.

He is survived by his wife, Edna Ann (Reader) Alwes; Children, Donald Ray Alwes, Jr. (Yvonne),Marla Patterson (Jeff) and Julia Ann Alwes; and his ssiters, Virginia Hayes and Lilian Chavis (John).

His service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Owen Funeral Home, 5317 Dixie Highway, with burial in Bethany Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home Wednesday 10 a.m.-8 p.m. and Thursday after 9 a.m. until the service.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Gidions International.

Donald was born on his oldest sister's birthday, June 23rd, he passed away on the 20th death anniversary of his older brothe Harold Alwes Jr. July 5th. Donald died at ten minutes to two in the morning and Harold died ten minutes after two in the morning.
Donald died of Liver cancer
