Death of John Park Mathers
John Park Mathers died at Coweta, Indian Territory on Sept 29, 1905 after a
short illness resulting from urie poisoning at the age of 51 years, 4 months and
20 days. He leaves a wife [Emma Getty Mathers] and five children to mourn his
loss two of them Leila and Ralph by his present wife who is a sister of Mrs
Sager and Mrs. Cameron of our city. Mr Mathers was a carpenter by trade and did
considerable building six years ago in Garber. He was a most energetic man,
generally performed the work of two men. He was a kind father and husband and
the unfortunate happenings by part of those to whom he was closely connected,
which may have embittered his life, could not in any manner be attributed to his
neglect of duty or council; for he lived an exemplary life and fairly up to the
Christian standard which faith he firmly espoused. Mr Mathers was a member of
the ME Church South for the past 16 years. His remains were shipped to Garber
followed by his bereaved family. The funeral was from the house of Mrs G W
Sager on Sunday, October 1st. Rev. Barber officiating as minister and Henry
Moritz as undertaker. Burial was made in beautiful Garber cemetery to which a
large concourse of our citizens followed the remains. The grave was lined with
cotton and evergreen bows rendering the last couch in earth most magnificent.
