The family moved from IL to MO prior to the Civil War. During the war she moved her family back to IL. Family story was that she had not heard from Josiah and fearing he was dead, married again. When Josiah returned from the war, Josiah took his family and moved to NE. They moved to Kearney Co., NE in 1874 where Melinda died of childbirth complications.
Josiah donated the land where Melinda was buried for Eaton Cemetery, she was the first to be buried here.
