Elzie Smith
April 6, 1920 - November 11, 2023

On November 11, 2023, Elzie Smith, 103 years of age of Canada, KY, passed away peacefully at Pikeville Medical Center, Pikeville, KY. She was born at her homeplace on Dix Fork Road, Sidney, KY, on April 6, 1920 the daughter of the late William Anderson Crigger and Maggie Oney Crigger. She was married to Verlin Smith for 51 years when he passed this life on October 31, 1988. To this union was born seven children. She was also preceded in death by four sons, Irvin, Henry, Tommy, and David (Little Britches) Smith; two stillborn babies, Buddie and Verlin; her siblings, Henry, Frank, and Lee Crigger, Juanita Blackburn, Ethel Smith, Gladus Thacker, and Agnes Blackburn. Elzie's hobbies were quilting and visiting with her Belfry Senior Citizens family, clogging to bluegrass music at the local festivals in which she was always a favorite at Hillbilly Day's. She looked so forward to the month of April when the festival would roll into town. She was always a hard worker and overcame many heartaches she faced in life. Always ready and willing to help a friend or neighbor in time of need. Elzie was strong willed and had a heart of gold and also loved a good laugh. This enabled her to overcome adversity; along with God's mercy and grace. She often would talk about the days of her childhood, growing up working in the corn fields and would always say, a little hard work never hurt anyone. Elzie's greatest possessions was her family, whom she loved with all her heart. She always made over the little children and made sure to get their attention. There will never be another Elzie Smith, everyone loved her that had the pleasure of getting to know her. So it's not goodbye, it's till we meet again! Elzie was of the Baptist faith and made her confession of faith in Jesus Christ three weeks before her death. She will be greatly missed by us all but we can see her again on "Heaven's Bright Shore!" Elzie is survived by her daughter, Naomi Blackburn of Canada, KY; two sons, Darrell Smith of Canada, KY, and Gary Smith of TN. She also leaves behind a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, whom she loved dearly and a host of loving family and friends. Visitation will be held from 6 - 9 PM on Tuesday, November 14th and Wednesday, November 15th, at R. E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with special services both nights at 7 PM. Funeral services will follow on Thursday, November 16, 2023, beginning at 1 PM in the funeral home chapel with Stoney Blackburn and others officiating. Burial will follow in the Thacker Cemetery, Canada, KY, with her family and friends serving as pallbearers. R. E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry is serving the Smith family.
