Andrew J. "Dock" Mathis was the son of David Mathis and Elizabeth Jones of Georgia.

1- Married: Mary Susan Huffman on 14 Feb 1869, Jackson County, North Carolina.

Children of Andrew J. "Dock" Mathis and Mary Susan Huffman include: Thomas Marion 'Bud' Mathis Married Pollie Ann 'Cally' Sutton on 22 Nov 1895, Canada, Jackson County, North Carolina; William "Wilborn" Mathis, Ransom Woodford "Rans" Mathis/Matthews, Fanny H Mathis, J. T. Akery Mathis.

2- Married: A. J. Mathis, 32, of Swain, son of Dave(Dead) and Elizabeth(Living) Mathis of Georgia(State), to Louiza Edwards, 18, of Swain, Daughter of Wm.(Dead) and Matilda (Living) Edwards of Swain, on March 4, 1889. Performed by J. H. Jenkins, Minister of the Gospel, at his store in Whittier, NC. William Lowery, W. M. Wright and S. J. Sherrill, witnesses.

J.("Dock") Mathis, 51, of Swain, parents dead, to Tillis Cochran, 21, (Correction: Rilla "Riller" Cockerham), of Swain, daughter of Bone Cochran (Living) and mother dead, on 25 Sep 1904 in Swain County, NC. Performed by: A.H. Hayes, Justice of the Peace in Whittier. J.H. Lequire, T.A. Parks and John S. Keener, witnesses.

Children of Rilla and Andrew include: Dewitt D, Bonnie M, Oliver S, Vera J, Pauline C, Elmer, Thelma.

By 1910 Rilla and Andrew had moved to the Pacolet Township of Spartanburg County, SC. From there, by 1920 Rilla and the children were living in Draytonville, Cherokee County, SC.

Prior to January 1920, Rilla's husband had left the family and returned to his native North Carolina. She and Andrew never divorced.

In North Carolina, Andrew becane ill and was taken to the Jackson County Home located in Webster where he died in 1934 as the result of chronic Bright's Disease. He was interred the following day in an unmarked grave in the Jackson County Home Cemetery, Sylva, Jackson, North Carolina.
