Vera was the daughter of Andrew Jackson "Dock" Mathis and Rilla Cockerham. Her birth name was Vera Effie Josephine Mathis.

Over time, she would use a combination of these names, in addition to using the surname of Cothran.

She was first married to Ernest White in Cherokee County, South Carolina, and together they would have 1-daughter, Delphine, in 1931. This marriage would soon end in divorce.

After 1940, she would move to Hillsborough County, Florida along with her mother, Rilla. In 1945, Vera, and her 13-year old daughter, are employed together as waitresses.

In 1946, she would marry Howard Irving Draper, a WWII veteran. He preceded her in death in 1976.

She was 82-years of age.
