Noble Henry Chowning, a retired owner of several lumber companies, died Oct. 31, 1996, in Corvallis at age 92.

A funeral was held Nov. 6 in Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home in Portland.

Mr. Chowning was born March 5, 1904, in Humphreys, Mo. He attended schools in Missouri and Washington, graduating from Kelso (Wash.) High School in 1921. He attended the University of Puget Sound.

He started in the lumber business in 1935 in Cosmopolis, Wash., and moved to Coquille in 1939, where he became a mill foreman. He started several lumber companies there and was president of the Coquille Chamber of Commerce in 1949.

In 1957 he leased a plywood layup plant in Milwaukie, and in 1959 built a plywood plant near Albany. In 1964 he sold the business to Brand-S Plywood Corp.

In 1966 he started in the investment business, becoming district manager in Eugene for the B.C. Morton Fund of Boston. He retired in 1970.

He married Elizabeth Bertha Sorg in 1927. She died in 1995. Survivors include his son, Eldon W. of Albany; daughter, Colleen C. McCorkle of Seattle; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Burial was in Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery in Portland. The family suggests remembrances to the University of Puget Sound for foreign student scholarships, the Rotary Exchange Scholarship Fund or the Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers in care of Fisher Funeral Home, P.O. Box 156, Albany, Ore. 97321.
