Mr. Joseph Hartley of Greenfield departed this life last Wednesday, March 1, 1905, after a brief illness of only three weeks. Mr. Hartley was a man of noble Christian character and sterling qualities, a kind and affectionate husband and loving father. He lived for those he loved, and his memory will be lovingly treasured by his dear afflicted ones.
Joseph Christie Hartley was born in Kirk Cowan, Wigtownshire, Scotland, July 12, 1840. His father, James Hartley, having passed to his reward when Joseph was 12 years of age. He with his mother and two brothers, sailed to America in 1854. He was united in marriage to Lucinda Walling, of Greenfield, at the age of 20 years, with whom he has happily lived until his death. To them were born seven children, four sons and three daughters. One son and one daughter, Anson and Rose, have preceded him to the spirit land. Those who survive are his bereaved widow, two daughters, Mrs. Anna J. Bemiss and Mrs. Nellie Burch; three sons, Hartson W., Joseph C., of Greenfield, and Eustace E., of Milton, Ont., Canada. Also two foster daughters, Mrs. Hattie Burch, of Smithfield, W.V., and Miss Jessie, who resides at home; three brothers, Peter and Eustace, of Michigan, and David , of Milton, Canada.
Joseph was truly converted to God at the age of 18, and maintained his trust in God, keeping up family worship until his death. He was a member of St. David's Presbyterian church of Campbellville, Ont., Canada, where he lived for thirty years prior to his return to Pennsylvania, some six years before his death. He found time for active participation in church, prayer meeting and Sabbath school work. He had acted as Sabbath school superintendent several times. He loved little children, and they loved him. Gifted with a cheerful disposition, he won many friends. He was very kind and obliging, always ready to assist in time of need. He will be missed in the neighborhood, and the home will be sadly darkened, and those yearning hearts will look with dim eyes to the vacant chair, and listen for the familiar step and long to hear the loved voice that will never be heard again in this world, but we can love through our tear dimmed eyes with faith that we will meet our loved ones in that beautiful land, where sickness, sorrow, death nor seperation never come. This sorrow stricken family have the sincere sympathy of the entire community in this their great affliction, adit has only been five weeks since they were called (the rest has been lost)
