Lucy was the daughter of Joseph Buell and Hannah Rider. Her full birth name might have been "Lucretia".

Her exact birth date is unclear: Her obituary of Dec. 7, 1888 said she was 84 years, 2 months, and 7 days old. That would put her birthdate at Oct 25, 1804. The headstone contradicts that.

She married:
(1)Thomas Eagar about 1822 in Auburn, New York and they had at least eight children together:

John Eagar (1823 - 1864)
Elizabeth Eagar (1824 - 1906)
Lucy Eagar (1826 - )
Mary Eagar (1827 - 1902)
Thomas Eagar (1830 - 1900)
Arabella Eagar (1832 - 1900)
Walter Eagar (1835 - 1835)
William Eagar (1835 - 1873)

Thomas died June 9, 1840 in Sing Sing, New York.

Thomas, Lucy, and their children had been members of the Catholic church; but Lucy and several of the children joined the Mormon church.

In 1846, Lucy and five of her children sailed with Sam Brannan and many other Mormons aboard the ship "Brooklyn" from New York to Yerba Buena (later named San Francisco), California.

The five children who sailed with her were: John, Mary, Thomas, Arabella, and William.

The children who did not sail on the "Brooklyn" were:

Elizabeth Eagar (who came to California later, with her husband, George Birdsall); Lucy Eagar, who stayed behind in New York and married several times; and Walter, the son who was the twin of Lucy's son, William Eager, and had died in 1835.

(2) William John Sweasey on November 2, 1853 in San Francisco, California. Lucy filed for divorce Nov 26, 1856. The divorce was final Feb 28, 1857.

(3) Almerin Grow on August 1, 1862. The marriage was later deemed invalid, as Almerin was already married to someone else.

Lucy's obituary and headstone use the surname "Eagar". Her obituary appeared in the December 7, 1888 issue of the Daily Alta California:

DIED - EAGAR -- In Monterey, December 1, Mrs. Lucy Eagar, a native of New York, aged 84 years, 2 months, and 7 days.
**************************
Lucy is buried in the El Encinal cemetery (also called the Monterey City Cemetery) in Monterey, California.

Her headstone reads:

Lucy Buell Eagar
Sept 1808 - Dec. 1888
[even though she was actually born in 1803]
---------------------
Lucy is buried in the family plot belonging to the family of her daughter, Mary Eagar (Little), wife of Milton Little.

Some online records confuse Lucy with a Lucy Calhoun who lived in San Francisco about the same time as Lucy Buell Eagar. That woman was Lucy Seymour, who had married Andrew Calhoun, Dec. 21, 1823 in New York. That Lucy Calhoun died May 5, 1888 in San Francisco, California.
