Thomas was born in Sing Sing (now Ossining) New York To Thomas and Lucy Buell Eagar. After his father's death, Thomas came at the age of 16 with his mother, Lucy and siblings to California on the Brooklyn, a cargo ship that sailed from New York City on 4 Febuary 1846 around Cape Horn, to Yerba Buena (San Francisco). The voyage lasted six months, covered 24,000 miles, endured two massive storms, and landed only twice before reaching their destination on 31 July 1846. They experienced a crowded and harsh existence for these six months and buried fourteen of their number on the way. When reaching their destination they began expanding the city of San Francisco, and it has never stopped.
