Miller, M. Hazel

CUMBERLAND – M. Hazel Miller passed from her earthly home on Sunshine Drive, Cumberland, to her pain-free heavenly home on Thursday, March 7, 2019. Born--April 12, 1925

She was the daughter of the late Mary Jane Powell-Rae and Joseph W. Powell. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert “Bob” Miller on September 9, 2009; four sisters, May Gentry, Margaret Powell, Myrtle Elliott, and Ann Logston; five brothers, John, Huey, Ernie, George “Bunny”, and Joe, Jr.

Hazel is survived by brothers, James Powell and wife Shirley, Bel Air, and William “Billy” Rae, Cumberland; and sisters-in-law, Wilma Powell, New Mexico, and Peggy Yetter, Cumberland.

Although Hazel and Bob had no children of their own, they loved and cherished their time with many nieces and nephews who enjoyed many special times with “Aunt Hazel” or “He Haw.” The whole family always gathered at Hazel and Bob’s home on the Fourth of July. Family members traveled to Cumberland from Ohio, New Mexico, and even California to enjoy the holiday picnic. Special memories were also made at Hazel and Bob’s cabin in the Largent, WV, area, near Capon Bridge. Although their cabin, built by Bob, was their special get away, they also traveled to California, New Mexico, and Florida.

Having grown up in Frostburg and Eckhart, Hazel attended Beall High School and Eckhart Methodist Church.

Hazel and her sister, Ann, went to Washington D.C. to find work. After spending several years in the big city, she returned to Cumberland and worked in the dietary department of Memorial Hospital until her retirement in the early 1980s.

Hazel loved to dance with her sisters, Ann and Myrtle, and play bingo with her buddy Peggy. Her favorite television show was the Gaithers. She loved to join in singing the old hymns.

Since her husband’s passing, Hazel was able to stay in her home with excellent around-the-clock caregivers, Naomi Oliver, Margaret Friend, Kathy Bittner, and Kim Dixon. We are forever grateful for the love and care these special ladies gave Hazel. They gave her tender loving care, treating her like their own. Over the past 10 years, additional caregivers, Linda, Pat, Rosie, Jennie, Sue, and Lillian all became part of Hazel’s life.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Monday, March 11, 2019, from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday, March 12, 2019, at 1 p.m. with Rev. George Harpold officiating. Friends will be received one hour prior to the funeral service.
Burial will take place in Sunset Memorial Park.
