CUMBERLAND, Md. — James A. "Jim" Powell left this world peacefully to his reward in Heaven in the early morning hours of Thursday, August 26, 2021. Born on January 21, 1933, and raised by his mother, Mary Jane Powell Rae, he spent his early years around the Frostburg and Cumberland areas. Jim joined the Army in 1953 and married his first wife, Janice Strawser Powell, who ultimately preceded him in death in 1995. Alongside the rest of Janice's family, Jim pursued a new life in Ohio. He lived in Warren until 1998 when he met and married the second love of his life, Shirley Hoadley, and he moved back to Cumberland. A sports enthusiast throughout his life, he especially loved playing golf with his many friends and throughout his life enthusiastically supported sports teams of his kids and grandkids. A magic hobbyist, he loved doing tricks for all the kids in the family. During his Warren years, Jim was a longtime employee at Amweld of Niles. He leaves behind his wife, Shirley Powell; two sons, George Powell of Gainesville, Florida. and James Kevin Powell of Warren; two daughters, Karen (Powell) Krepps and husband, Robert of Masury, and Mary Ann Lemmert and husband Robert of Cumberland, Md.; a brother, Billy Rae of Cumberland, Maryland; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren, all cherished. In recent years, Jim made new relationships with long lost distant family, the Condons of Virginia. Services will be held in two locations to accommodate those in both places he considered home, Cumberland, Md., and Warren. Calling hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, August 29, 2021, with funeral service immediately following at the Sowers Funeral Home in Frostburg, Md., with the Rev. George M. Harpold officiating. American Legion Farrady Post 24 will accord military honors at the funeral home. Another set of calling hours will be 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2021, at the Crown Hill Burial Park in Vienna, with a brief graveside service immediately following. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Jim's home church, the Vale Summit UMC in Frostburg, Maryland. Online condolences may be sent to www.sowersfh.com.
