CUMBERLAND — Robert Ernest Miller, 85, of Cumberland, died Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009, at the Golden Living Center.

Born April 23, 1924, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Robert Cookerly Miller and Anna Estelle (Shore) Miller Long. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Barbara Anna (Miller) Brannon and Virginia Charlotte (Miller) Houseworth.

He served four years in the US Army and served as a medic in Army hospitals in France during World War II.

Mr. Miller attended Allegany High School in Cumberland. He worked in the Curing Room at the Kelly Springfield Tire Company until his retirement in 1977.

Bob is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Mary Hazel (Powell) Miller; his nephews, David Lee Brannon, Russell Francis Brannon and Samuel William Yost; nieces, Debora Ann (Brannon) England, Karen Ann (Yost) Corso and Sandra Kay (Yost) Age; special cousin, Carleton Shore and his brother-in-law, James Powell.

Mr. Miller was a member of the American Legion Cumberland Post 13 and served in the Combined Veterans Honor Guard for many years. He was also a member of the Cumberland Moose; the Cumberland Eagles; the VFW Henry Hart Post 1411 and the Cumberland Outdoor Club.

Bob was a loving husband and enjoyed with his wife the many years spent at their cottage on the Cacapon River in Largent, W.Va.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, (www.scarpellifuneralhomes.com) on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home on Friday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. George Harpold officiating.

Interment will be in Maryland State Veterans Cemetery, Rocky Gap, Flintstone.

Military honors will be accorded by the Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.

Hazel would like to extend a special thanks to the caring staff at the Golden Living Center who took care of Bob during his short stay at the center.
