John (D.?) Stevenson was the third of twelve known children of William "Little Gabriel" Stevenson (1725-1809) and Mary McLelland/McClelland (1730-1811), who married c1755 in presumably Pennsylvania. Both William and Mary were American immigrants.

John married Elizabeth Moffett (1766-1835) (other sources say 1761-1834) on 01 Sep 1785 at Rowan (later Iredell) County, North Carolina. It is not known where Elizabeth is buried, but it is probably at Old Fourth Creek Cemetery like her husband. Elizabeth was the daughter of William Moffett and a Miss Sloan. John and Elizabeth were the parents of thirteen known children, namely:

1. William Moffett Stevenson (1786-1879)
2. Mary "Polly" Stevenson Morrison (1786-1851)
3. David Moffett Stevenson (1787-1863)
4. Rachel Stevenson (1788-1868, or 1873?)
5. Jane Stevenson McHenry (1790-???)
6. Margaret Stevenson (1792-???)
7. Fergus Stevenson (1794-1880).
8. Nancy Stevenson Potts (1795-p1860)
9. Eliza Stevenson (1797-1825)
10. Thomas Stevenson (1799-1880)
11. Prudence Stevenson Boyd (1801-1835)
12. Ann Stevenson Milligan (1803-1872)
13. Rebecca Stevenson McEwen (1805-???)
