Sicilian immigrant, Maria Gracia Lazzario D'Angelo, wed Gaetano Messina approximately in 1850 in Italy due to fact their first son "R" was born there in 1851 (per 1860 New Orleans census). After coming to New Orleans around 1852-1856, she and Gaetano bore children, Dominique (1856), Samuel Rosario (1858), Rosalia (1859), Benedito (1862), Johanni Louis (1865), Antonino Vincent (1868), Joseph (1870) and Vincent Mathieu (1874). The Messina family lived in the French Quarter very near to the French Market, where Gaetano ran his fruit/vegetable business. She died on Gallatin St. near Ursulines on October 16, 1886 of pericarditis. Per her obituary, the Benevolent Association of the Sons of Louisiana, were requested to attend her funeral. The society had a tomb in St. Vincent de Paul #1 on Louisa Street. Interment records were lost during Hurricane Katrina in August 2005. It is assumed she and Gaetano are buried there.
