Sicilian, Gaetano Messina, of Palermo, Sicily, Italy immigrated between 1834 (per immigration card) and 1855 (per immigration card) as a mariner-laborer-merchant to New Orleans to establish a better life for he and wife Maria Grazia Lazzario D'Angelo (~1831-1886). They likely wed in 1850 in Sicily because their first son, "R" was born there in 1851 (per 1860 census). Gaetano and Maria could not read nor write according to their census records and other documentation in New Orleans.
They lived in the French Quarter very near the French Market to be able to operate his fruit business. It is here children, Dominique (1856-1887), Samuel Rosario (1858-1907), Rosalia (1859), Benedito (1862-1923), Johanni (1865-1917), Antonino (1868-1931), Joseph A. (1870-1915) and Vincent M. Messina (1874-1937) were born.
He served in the Confederate 3rd Regiment, European Brigade, Louisiana Militia (Garde Francaise) 1861-1865. Gaetano died in his home (21 Hospital Street) June 1st, 1875 of Chronic Rheumatism.

Gravesite Details

His and Maria's burial location, according to her obit (10-17-1886) The Sons of Louisiana Benevolent Society are requested to attend her funeral. They had a Society Tomb in St. Vincent De Paul #1. Likely Gaetano buried there as well in 1875.
