She choose her youngest son's birthday to go to heaven as her gift to him and the family, freeing her from the dementia that took over her body in the past several years.
She was a mentor to her kids, grandkids and so many more that were touched by her life! She was known for her baking and cooking skills and always finding room for another at the table. Along with family gatherings, many of the kid's friends and teammates enjoyed her cakes and cookies. Pool and bowling leagues enjoyed full meals she prepared to show appreciation to them for their business..
Born to Ora (Severin) and John Nessinger on May 16,1928. Kathryn married Harry (Red) Zastrow on April 30, 1947. Together they owned and operated Kathryn's Motel and Red's Bar in Algoma.
Kathryn became an instant mother to Harry's children after his first wife and youngest son passed away. She welcomed Daniel, James, Leona and Gene to her heart and raised them along with nine children she and Harry had together; Patrick, Ellen, Nancy, Harry, Tim, Mike, Luke, Mary and Mark.
Kathryn was involved with Algoma Park and Rec. Dept., Algoma Chamber of Commerce, Tops Program and St. Mary's Rosary Society. After Harry's death, she sold the business to the Rouse family and went to work at the Algoma Hardwoods. She also had worked for Wautlet's Bakery and Wisconsin Label.
Surviving Kathryn are her children and their spouses: Donna [Danny] Zastrow), Dr. Leona Zastrow (Daniel), Eugene Zastrow , Patrick (Diane) Zastrow, Ellen (Chuck) Siebold, Nancy (John) Riley, Harry (Roxann) Zastrow, Tim (Cheryl) Zastrow, Mike (Sue) Zastrow, Luke (Natalie) Zastrow, Mary (Wayne) Worachek, Mark (Pam) Zastrow. grandkids, great grandkids and great-great grandkids. Her sister Laura Matzke and sister in law Betty Lou (Chester) Nessinger along with several nieces and nephews.
Kathryn has joined her husband, Harry aka Red, sons Daniel, James (Edna) and Charles in heaven.
She also will meet her siblings again, Caroline (Vernon), John, Chester aka Joe, Melvin (Dorothy), Mary Jane, Raymond, Joyce (Gus), Phillip (Judy) and Ralph. Let the card game begin!!
Family and friends may call at St. Mary Catholic Church, Algoma, Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2018 from 9:00 AM until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM with Father Alvan Amadi officiating. Burial later in the church cemetery.
