Philip C. Keaney Sr., 81, of Port Saint Lucie, Fla., and formerly of West Pittston, passed away peacefully Sept. 6 at Fort Saint Lucie Medical Center in Port Saint Lucie, Fla., following a brief illness.

He was born in Arlington, Mass., on Oct. 27, 1922, a son of the late John B. and Molly (Donnelly) Keaney.
Surviving are his children, John, of Port St. Lucie, with whom he resided; James, of West Pittston; Philip, of Shavertown; Mary Ellen (Desiderio), of Jenkins Township; and Mark, of Greenville, S.C.

Philip is also survived by nine grandchildren and one-great-grandchild. Surviving siblings, brothers, Monsignor James Keaney, Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; the Rev. Father John Keaney, Maryknoll, N.Y.; sisters, Ellen and Mary, Billerica, Mass.; and Sister Carole Marie IHM, Goshen, N.Y.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Hugh and Francis Keaney.

After graduating from Billerica High School, Philip earned his B.A. from Boston College. He enlisted in the Army during World War II and served in the Aleutian Islands. After the war, Philip earned his M.A. from Boston College in social work and moved from Massachusetts to Pennsylvania. There he met and married the late Eleanor Magnoni. Philip began his career at the VA and then worked at Catholic Social Services. He later joined the Scranton Counseling Center and had an affiliation with Lourdesmont of Clarks Summit. He retired to Port Saint Lucie in 1986 and worked part time at the New Horizons Counseling Center. Later, Philip devoted much of his time as a volunteer for Saint Vincent DePaul. Philip was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church.

Friends may call at the Howell-Lussi Funeral Home, 509 Wyoming Ave., West Pittston, on Friday, Sept. 24 during the hours of 6 and 8 p.m. A funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, West Pittston. Monsignor James Keaney and the Rev. John Keaney will officiate.

Friends attending the funeral mass are asked to go directly to the church. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carverton section of Kingston Township.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution may be sent to the American Cancer Society or Saint Vincent DePaul of Port St. Lucie, FL 34981
