Martha J Barsness was the daughter of Jens Jenssen Barsness and Maria L Thue. She was one of thirteen children.
Martha married Sam J Johnson on July 3, 1913 in Cass Lake, Minnesota.
They had eight children.
Obit was found in "The Cass Lake Times" on March 11, 1971 on the front page:
"Mrs. Sam Johnson Passed Away March 6, 1971.
Mrs. Sam Johnson, a resident of the Cass Lake area since 1911 passed away at the Bemidji Hospital at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 6, 1971. She had been ill since the 15th of December and in and out of the hospital several times.
Martha Barsness was born in Goodhue County near Evansville, Minnesota on November 13, 1897, and came to rural Cass Lake in 1911 with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jens Barsness. She was united in marriage to Sam Johnson of rural Cass Lake on July 3, 1913, and they resided on their farm until his retirement, when they moved to the village of Cass Lake.
Funeral services were held yesterday, Wednesday, March 10, 1971 at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Arlo Feiock officiating. Mrs. Dayne Sather was organist and George Suther was soloist.
Pallbearers were: James, Reynold, and Melvin Ekstrom, Herman Kling, Charles Richards and Chris Larson.
Interment was made in the family lot in Pine Grove cemetery under the direction of the Cass Lake Funeral Service.
She is survived by her husband, Sam Johnson of Cass Lake, and by five daughters and one son. Edith Kling, Evelyn Butcher and Mae Bunker, all of Portland, Oregon: June Thomas of Mololla, Oregon and Mary Larson of Beaverton, Oregon and Robert Johnson of Chicago. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren, and by five brothers John, Andrew and Edwin of Cass Lake, Melvin of Walker and Harry of Hibbing and by one sister, Bella Greenside of Walker.
