"Mother"

Flossie Elvina Barnes-Curless-Hendrix was born on Aug 21, 1895
in Burrton, Harvey Co, Kansas to Frank Douglas Barnes and Viola Marie Mourn-Barnes. She married Charles Harkless Curless, who was a farmer in his early years, then turned to becoming a cabinetmaker/carpenter during the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl. They later divorced and she married Ray Hendrix. Ray had a great sense of humor, as did Flossie (but she was mostly a little stern). He was a professional clown. She was a loving and devoted mother to nine children: Elmer, Vernon, Clayton, Ethel, Thelma, Louise, Viola, Alvin and my grandmother, Fern.

My mother has clearer memories of her, but I do remember her myself when I was a child. She passed nursing school, but didn't pursue a career in that direction (the bottom photo of her was taken just after she passed nursing school). My Grandma Fern ran a nursing operation from her home and took care of her mother in addition to the others she took in for pay. Flossie died in 1974 in my grandma's home in Hutchinson, Kansas.
