Joseph is survived by his step-children: Perrie Capps, Sandra Capps, Susan Capps , Julie (Charley) Ross , Connie (Ed) Schiesser , and Clancy (Cheryl) Bullock; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife: Edith Schafer; second wife: Nancy Schafer; parents: John and Mary Schafer; 4 brothers; 5 sisters; and nieces and nephews.
Joseph was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Crown Point and a U.S. Army Veteran. He was an excellent dairy farmer, farming over 400 acres. He milked over 54 cows twice a day. Joe was “Outstanding” in his field. He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, founder of the Historical Agricultural Society and past Officer with Farm Bureau.
