Lois Marie Amyx passed away in her sleep on Thursday, March 22, after being hospitalized for double pneumonia.
Lois was born in Cabarton Valley, ID on October 30, 1926 to Edward Warren and Edna May Gifford (nee Vaughn). She was the fourth of 8 children: Keith, David, Billy, Dolores, Lorraine, Neva, & Margie. She was preceded in death by her parents, all three brothers, her sister Dolores, and her husband Joe. She is survived by a daughter, Donna Heffner (Don) of Montour; granddaughters Lyndee Stelling (Craig) of Emmett and Angie Heffner of Montour; and three great-grandchildren: Catalina and Jin Rolland and Rachel Stelling.
The Gifford family moved around early on, but Lois lived most of her childhood in Montour, ID, where she graduated from Montour High School.
In May 1945, Lois married Joe Amyx at Gowan Field chapel and moved to Biloxi until he was discharged from the military. They moved back to Montour in March 1946. The happiest day of Lois’ life occurred later that year when her daughter, Donna, was born. They continued to live in Montour and Joe farmed until he became paralyzed from encephalitis in 1951.
A few years later, they opened up the Montour Store and Post Office, which Lois ran. Joe passed away from peritonitis in December 1963. When her sister Dolores divorced and needed to care for four young children, Lois gave up her Postmistress job, so that Dolores could have it and support her family.
Lois continued to run the store through 1965. After that, she worked for the Emmett School District cleaning schools in Montour and Sweet, retiring in spring of 1992.
Lois was overjoyed when her daughter Donna gave her two granddaughters: Lyndee and Angie Heffner. She was a fantastic grandmother, babysitting the girls while their mother milked cows. Both Lyndee and Angie have many happy memories of their grandma playing in the snow with them, pulling them in sleds, and pushing them on the swing-set in their yard in Montour. Lois was also a fantastic cook and her pie crust and homemade noodles were legendary.
In 1977, Lois built her house above the Montour valley. Her mother May Gifford lived in a home next to her for several years and then with her. Lois cared for her until her death in 1992. After that, she welcomed her sister-in-law, Doris Wagner, to her home for four years.
The house was on a sizable lot and lifelong gardener, Lois, kept the lawn and garden looking great until her health declined too much when she was 88.
Lois joined the LDS Church in 1967. She participated in various projects and was Primary President for a number of years. She was also Relief Society Secretary and a Spiritual Living teacher. Lois was proud to have served in the Boise Temple twice a week from 1985 through 1987.
From the moment her granddaughter, Angie, gave birth to her son, Jin, he required Lois’ presence and was restless whenever she was away. So, Lois went to Las Vegas to live with Angie and helped care for her children until they moved back to Idaho in 2007.
Her whole life was one of service. Her greatest wish was to be useful and she was a very hard worker, doing anything that needed to be done, leading by example every step of her journey.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at 1:00 PM at the Emmett LDS Stake Center with viewing available the hour prior to the start of services. Burial will follow at the Emmett, Cemetery.
