Ed was born to George and Alice Eddy Smith in Springfield, IL, December 2, 1934. He retired from the US Navy after more than 20 years of service. Some of his duty assignments included two tours in Vietnam, a Recruit Training Company Commander at Great Lakes, an instructor at Fleet Training Group Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and he also served on several ships. After retiring from the military, Ed became a member of the Warrensburg Fire Department and worked for and retired from ADM.
Ed married Vickie Rhodes on June 29, 1962 at Mound Chapel Church, Decatur, IL. She preceded him in death on July of 2009. Ed leaves behind three sons, Kendall (Sabrina) of Warrensburg, IL, George (Shari) of Charleston, SC and Ronald (Marla) of Taylorville, IL. Two sisters, Verna (Howard) Kramer of Decatur, IL and Carol (Ralph) Mathias of Crossville, TN. Eight grandchildren, Dalton, Clinton, Roma, Crystal, Savannah, Brittany, Tyler and Brandon, one great grandchild, Ella and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his beloved wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Mary Charlotte (infant) and Doris Petro Dehne.
A funeral service will be held 10:00 AM Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at Graceland Fairlawn Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM Monday, March 26, 2018 at Graceland Fairlawn Funeral Home. Burial will be held at Illini Cemetery in Warrensburg, IL with military rites conducted by Macon County Honor Guard.
