Mary Bowman, second child of Marchel (née Blizzard) and John Bowman, was born in Darke County, Ohio, where her parents were among the early settlers. The Bowman family migrated after 1860 to Champaign County, Illinois, where John Bowman died in 1868.

Mary Bowman and William T. Holt, a Civil War veteran, were married on 11 May 1871 in Champaign County. The couple became the parents of three children, and farmed in the county's Newcomb Township until at least 1910. The couple were enumerated in 1920 in Fisher, Champaign County. He was then a sawmill laborer.

"Mrs. Mary Bowman Holt died at the County Hospital this morning at one thirty o'clock.
"Mrs. Holt was born in Ohio on October 22nd, 1842. In 1862 she came to Illinois and was married on May 11, 1871. Prior to March 12, 1922, when she went to the County Farm to make her home, she had resided in Fisher and Mahomet.
"Funeral arrangements have not been made."

Mary Holt's second child, enumerated in 1880 as daughter "Mitchal M.," age 4, died prior to 1900. This daughter was named after her maternal grandmother, Marchel Bowman (née Blizzard), who in 1880 was also enumerated as "Mitchel."

Notes

Mary, daughter of John Bowman, was baptized (date uncertain) at Saint John's Lutheran and German Reformed Church in German (now Liberty) Township, Darke County, Ohio. Mary's elder sister Catherine was baptized there, too, identified as the daughter of "Marchel" and John Bowman. (This church is no longer extant.)
