Emanuel Bowman was the twelfth and last child of Marchel (née Blizzard) and John Bowman, born in 1866 in Champaign County, Illinois, where his family settled after 1860. Known as "Manuel" or "Mannie," he worked as a farmer and laborer. He did not marry.

"Dewey, Ill., Feb. 16—(Special to The Courier.)—Funeral services for Mannie Bowman was conducted by Rev. Hubbard at the Dewey M. E. church, Saturday morning at 10 o'clock. Burial was made at the Maple Wood cemetery at Rantoul. Mr. Bowman died Thursday afternoon, death was caused from a cancer on the face." Year of birth uncertain. The date on the death certificate: 18 Jul 1863. 1900 census has Jul 1866, and in the 1870 census he is shown to be age 4 (born about 1866).
