Uncle Rube was the s/o William Henry and Catherine Grindstaff Perkins. He was first married to Melissa Edwards d/o Jacob Frazier and Abigail Adkins Edwards by whom he had 2 children. She died in 1865 and he married her sister, Matilda, 'Til' and they had 9 children. This family along with other relatives moved from Boone Co., Mo. to Pottawatomie Co., OK. when it was Indian Territory and were one of the first families to settle in a town called Avoca of which only the cemetery remains today.
He and his wife built a double log cabin. A board across the north end of the living room held a few caddies of tobacco, some boxes and cans of snuff. This was the first merchandise sold in Avoca. Uncle Rube also became the Postmaster of the town. The first murder was an outlaw that was killed by his own gang in Uncle Rube's store.
Though I never knew him, My husband's grandmother who was Uncle Rube's grand niece by marriage, did. She spoke highly of him and his wife, 'Aunt Til' and family.
