Jonathan Perkins, the son of William Henry and Catherine (Grindstaff) Perkins, both natives of Kentucky was born in 1844. In the 1850 Census the family was living in Boone County, Missouri. At the age of 18 on March 5 1862, he enlisted in Company F of the 9th Missouri State Militia Cavalry, under the Command of Captain Cook. The unit was mustered into service on April 22, 1862 in Columbia, Missouri. Jonathan was mustered out on April 21, 1865 in Sturgeon, Missouri. The 9th MSM Cavalry was one of Missouri's most successful counter-guerrilla units.

Jonathan married Nancy J Grindstaff on August 22, 1869 in Sullivan, Missouri. To this union were seven known children. The couple’s first child was born July 1870 and possibly died before the census of August 17, 1870, Ester E abt. 1871, Mary A abt. 1873, Missouri Ella 1875, Mahala Jane 1878, Laura B abt. 1879 and Mattie L abt. 1882. In 1870 the family was living next to his brother Michael in Cedar Township, Boone County Missouri and Jonathan’s niece Nancy Sapp the daughter of Susan Perkins Sapp was living with them.
