Pearleva "Pearl" Shannon Miller was born in January 1921 to Leslie Shannon and Geneva Cole Shannon in Kemper County, MS.
During early life, she joined Mt. Zion Moscow Baptist Church in DeKalb, MS. After marriage and moving to Philadelphia, MS, she later joined Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. She later joined Mars Hill Church of God in Christ, also in Philadelphia, MS, where she was a member at her demise.
She married T.J. Miller, the son of Walter Miller and Estella Steele Miller, who was a native of Neshoba County, MS.
On June 16, 1964, her husband, T.J. Miller, was one of the ten people who were at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Philadelphia, Neshoba County, MS, for a Finance Committee Meeting. After the church meeting was dismissed, T.J. followed Cornelius Steele and wife, Mable Steele, and their two children in his car. As they drove away from the meeting, their vehicles were stopped by five angry white men who were looking for Andrew Goodman, James Earl Chaney, and Michael Schwerner. They were allowed to drive away safely while others at the meeting were beaten, and the Mt. Zion Church was burned later that night.
She died January 22, 2018, at the age of 96.
