Ernest Enns, 93, of Hooker, Okla. passed away Feb. 25, 2009 at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal, Kan.
Ernest was born Dec. 27, 1915 on the family farm south of Hooker. He was the son or Henry and Katy Balzer Enns.
He attended rural school at Pleasant View near his home and then at Adams Public Schools. He worked in Buhler, Kan. for a time then went to California where he also worked in the fruit fields for relatives and enjoyed driving his Indian Motorcycle.
Ernest came home from California to marry Elfrieda Niedens on Jan. 9, 1938 in Hooker. They lived with their families and rented various farms in the Adams area until 1972 when they built their home in Hooker.
Ernest worked for the Schroeder Brothers, helping build houses. He was the handyman for Frank Parks, tending his horses, farming and keeping the various properties up to date.
He loved his family and played many games with them. He was an excellent domino player and played weekday mornings at the Hooker Senior Citizens Center.
He was a member of the Hooker Church of the Nazarene, baptized in 1991 and served on the Church Board as a trustee. He was very interested in his girls' education and served on the Adams School Board
Ernest was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Nick, Henry, Pete and Leonard; five sisters, Katie Enns, Martha Enns, Edna Cosby, Linda Schmidt, and Elizabeth Enns.
Survivors include his wife, Elfrieda Enns of Good Samaritan Center in Liberal; two daughters, Elvera Rhines and her husband Jerry of Hooker, and Anita Geraci and her husband Leo of New Orleans; brother, John Enns and his wife Billie of Hooker; a sister, Esther Ediger of Reedley, Calif.; two sisters in law, Alvina Enns Neighbors of Walnut Ridge, Ark. and Liesbeth Enns of Woodinville, Wash.; four grandchildren, Kari Quinnelly, Annette McAdams, Lori Montalbo and Gary Raff; five great grandchildren, Katie, Justin, Abigail, Gabriel and Haley.
Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, March 1, 2009 at Church of the Nazarene in Hooker, Okla. with Rev. Roy Berkley, officiating and Rev. Dr. David Hoffman, assisting. Interment will be in the Hooker Cemetery directed by Roberts Brothers Funeral Home, Inc. in Hooker.
