Grace graduated from Falmouth High School in 1948, and was a member of the Falmouth Varsity Softball team.
She retired from the Spotsylvania Commissioner of Revenue in 1999 and was a member of Zion Methodist Church.
Grace supported our veterans and law enforcement. She served as the Commander of the Ladies Auxiliary for the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10546; and also served as the President of the Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary #15. Grace was a member of U.S. Air Force, 3rd Air Force (USAFE) 3rd Hospital Group/7510th U.S. Air Force Hospital, Wimpole Park England Reunion Association.
Grace is survived by her son, Virgil Lee Abel, Jr. and his wife, Maria; her stepsons, Carl E. Poates, and Major Kevin Scott Poates and his wife, Jane; stepdaughter, Debra Ann Perry and her husband, Elwood (Mason “Woodie” Perry, Jr.); grandson, Ricky Abel; granddaughter, Erika Schleigh; five stepgrandchildren, Joseph “Joe” Perry and his wife, Andria, Marie L. Johnson and her husband, Eric, and Stefanie, Jaci, and Kim Poates; and six great grandchildren.
She was preceded in her death by her husband of 42 years, TSGT Percy C. Poates Jr. USAF Retired; and a grandson, Cliffton Abel.
Grace will be remembered for her great cooking, love of family and a person who gave more to others and expected nothing in return.
Grace’s family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Monday, November 13, 2017 at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 10719 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg. A graveside service will follow at 12:30 p.m. in Oak Hill Cemetery with Pastor Charles Bullock officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cancer Fund of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post #3103, Fredericksburg, VA and FOP Lodge #15 Auxiliary Fredericksburg, VA.
