He was born in White Oak, to Herndon and Agnes Newton Bourne. After the death of his father during the flu epidemic, he was raised by his grandfather, Clarence Bourne.
A graduate of Falmouth High School, where he participated in track, baseball and basketball. For several years, he was the catcher for the White Oak Treemen minor-league baseball team. He married his wife, Evelyn Wine, on Nov. 1, 1941, and entered the U.S. Army in 1943. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the 28th Division as a platoon leader in the Battle of the Bulge.
After his military service, he was a mail carrier, service station operator and a Gulf TBA distributor. In 1963, he and his partner, Raymond K. Hall, purchased Tire Tread Service. When the company incorporated in 1971, Mr. Bourne became president and served in that capacity until his death. He was a member of Hull's Memorial Baptist Church, where he was a deacon for over 50 years.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Harry Bourne; and sisters, Elizabeth Bourne and Mary Williams.
