At the age of ten, he was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He had a great desire to join with the Saints in America, and at the age of seventeen he boarded the vessel Manchester. While traveling to Utah, he worked on the government telegraph line from Missouri to Salt Lake City. From there he went to Plain City, Utah, to find work. While living there, he married Laura Thueson on October 11, 1863.
