Fred E. Babel of Santa Monica, Cal., formerly of Grand Island, died last night following surgery according to word received by his sister, Mrs. Elvira (sic) Hoye, Wood River, and friends in Grand Island. Mr. Babel left Grand Island about four years ago. While here he had operated a grocery store and service station. Funeral services are scheduled for Friday.
Survivors include his wife, three daughters and two sons. One son preceded him in death. Mr. Babel was born Nov. 26, 1888, in Grand, Neb., came to Hall County with his parents when they settled on a farm near Cairo in 1894. He attended the rural schools and was graduated from the Wood River High School. After a business college course he went to work for the Burlington railroad's claim department in Omaha and later became claim agent for the Western Union Telegraph Company with headquarters in Omaha and Denver. He engaged in the automobile and accessory business in Grand Island in 1919 and built up the Nebraska Tire and Motor Company from a one man business to a firm hiring 16 persons. Before moving to California he operated a filling station in the 2200 block West Second.
