Note: In the Tuesday, October 14th, 1924 issue of the Grand Island Independent newspaper there is an extensive news article of the accident that killed Charles Babel. This is not transcribed here. Mr. Babel died as the result of injuries he received when he and Claud Lindsey (a truck driver) were loading a newly repaired tire into a service truck when the tire exploded causing injuries to both men.

Scores of sorrowing friends and relatives filled St. Paul's English Lutheran church at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, to attend the funeral of Charles A. Babel, whose tragic death occurred Monday afternoon. The services were conducted by Rev. C. B. Harman, assisted by Rev. John Hershey. A short service at the home of his brother, Fred Babel, 523 West 9th street, preceded the church service. (Further funeral details omitted here)...Burial was made in the Grand Island cemetery.

Charles A. Babel was born in Muskingum county, Ohio, on Nov. 24, 1884, being aged 39 years, 10 months, and 9 days. At the age of one years, he came with his parents to Nebraska where he had since resided, most of his life being spent on the farm of his parents. On Oct. 18, 1917, he was united in marriage with Miss Veda Hansen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Hansen, of Central City. Four children were born, Joclyn Lee, aged 6; Charles Ronald, aged 5; William Arnold, aged 3; and Marvin Emil, aged 8 months. Besides the bereaved widow and children, he is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Babel, of this city, three sisters, Allora Hoye, of Wood River; Olive Highland, of this city, Gladys Cates, of Beatrice, and three brothers, Roy W. of Shoshone, Idaho; Fred E. and Wm. W., of this city. He was a member of the Woodman lodge and for the past year had been connected with the Nebraska Tire & Motor company, where his loss will be keenly felt.
