Erma Lee Phillips Richardson joined her Heavenly Father on October 3, 2017. The eldest daughter of Isaac and Nancy Carroll Phillips, Erma was born on October 6, 1947, in Shea, Tennessee.

Erma graduated from Union High School, West College Corner, Indiana in 1965 and married Arthur Cross on February 26, 1966. They had three wonderful children together, Artnettia Lynn, Arthur Lee and Steven Douglas. Erma later married Michael (Mick) Richardson on November 10, 2003. Erma worked many years as a nurse assistant at Oxford View Nursing Home and at Miami University.

As a member of the College Corner Church of the Nazarene, she volunteered in the children's ministry and taught Sunday school. Erma volunteered at Union School for many years, and all the children called her "Granny Erma." She especially enjoyed movie night, showing a film and providing snacks to the children after school. Erma loved children and working with them brought her great joy.

Erma's life dream was to buy an old house and fix it up. She completed this dream in an old farmhouse on State Line Road in West College Corner, Indiana. The big house proved a place for her family and friends to congregate. The children especially liked it there because they could play and get as dirty as they wanted. There were always mud pies to make and flowers to pick.

Her happiest moments in life were when each of her children born and when her grandchildren were born. Her great-grandchildren brought her even more happiness. Erma was committed to caring for her family and counted them as her greatest treasure.

Erma never knew a person she would not help if she could. Erma would, as the saying goes, give the shirt off her back. Erma knew her gift of compassion and would help others generously. Helping others proved her the most fulfilling moments in life.

Erma's favorite activity was talking to the Lord. Her family will always remember Erma getting up in the early hours of the morning, rocking in her rocking chair while she prayed to God. The harder she prayed, the harder she would rock. She enjoyed gardening, and she'd dig and work until she was covered in mud. She would pray while she worked in her garden and this brought her peace. To her family, she leaves the legacy of living out her faith.
She enjoyed swinging on her front porch swing watching people drive by. Erma enjoyed cleaning, especially houses. She had numerous hobbies. Her family enjoys treasures she made over the years. Her talents were many including needlepoint, crochet, knitting, sewing, quilting, and woodworking.

Erma is survived by her daughter Artnettia Crouse, husband Christopher and son, Steven Cross; grandchildren Christopher Cross, Sarah Woods, husband Steven, Jessica Cross, Katherine Cross and Madeline Cross; great-grandchildren Ryan Coffey, Luke Cross, Paitlyn Cross, Logan Cross, Shelby Woods, Brylee Denny, and Brooklynn Denny; brothers J.C. Phillips, wife Lorene, Rendal Phillips, wife Jackie; sisters Della Harper, husband Walter (Charles), and Nancy Szymkowiak, husband Ernest and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Nancy Carroll Phillips (September 8, 1990); father, Isaac Phillips (February 16, 1998); husband, Michael (Mick) Richardson (October 2, 2016); son, Arthur Lee Cross (January 19, 2002); brothers, Rondal Phillips (August 9, 1944), Billy Phillips (September 16, 2006), Rondy Dean Phillips (March 25, 2014) and Thomas Houston Phillips (July 2, 2015).

While her family and friends will miss her dearly, they will celebrate her life in a worship service to be held at the College Corner Church of the Nazarene, 306 W. 3rd Street, West College Corner, Indiana on Friday, October 6, 2017 at 1 PM. Family and friends may offer condolences at the church prior to the service at 12 PM (Noon).
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the College Corner Church of the Nazarene Children's Ministry or the Union School P.T.O. Granny Erma's Memorial Fund for Children. Miller, Moster, Robbins Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
