MRS. CARA B. EMERSON
Mrs.. Cara (Byam) Emerson, widow of Waiter B. Emerson, and a former resident of this city for many years, died last evening at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William Riese, Jr., of 1 John street, Lawrence, with whom she had resided for the past 10 years, after a long illness, aged 87 years. She was born in Chelmsford, the daughter of the late, George A. and Mary S. (Byam) Byam. Her survivors include a daughter, Mrs. William Riese, Jr., of Lawrence, a brother, Ray S. Byam of Rye, N. H.; three grandchildren, Nancy S. Riese, William Riese, III, and Stephen B. Riese, all of Lawrence; and many nieces and nephews. (“Cara B. Emerson,” The Lowell Sun, Lowell Massachusetts, 26 Oct 1951, 3, Newspaper, NEHGS.org.)

Her death notice can be confusing, “Aunt Cara” did care for and raise from infancy Edith Byam, daughter of George A. Byam and Edith (Philbrick) Byam, after the death of her mother, so in that respect she mothered the child.
Additionally, she immigrated from Canada in 1870 to the United States. I suspect her parents died. In the 1880 Census she is living with the Byam family and her maiden name was O'Dette. She became a U.S. Citizen in 1886. She was adopted by George A. and Mary Saville (Byam) Byam.
"Aunt Cara" was a Nurse. She first married William H. Pomeroy of Chelmsford on August 25, 1892. Following his death, before 1920, she married Walter B. Emerson.
