Bernard graduated with honors from Boston University Medical School in 1905 and interned at Grace Hospital in New Haven, Connecticut. He began practice in Lowell in February 1907. In 1910, he contracted Rheumatic fever and died.

Note: He is buried in Chelmsford, but his children placed a gravestone with his wife Belle May (Gould) Byam at West Cemetery, Bristol, Hartford County, Connecticut, seen here.
