Suzette R. Langenfeld - Age 81

Suzette Rose Langenfeld was born on December 19, 1924, to Joseph and Mary (Hammes) Sondag joining six brothers and sisters. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Our Lady of Fatima in Portsmouth where she remained an active member throughout her entire life. Suzette attended St. Mary's Catholic School in Portsmouth, Iowa, before graduating in 1942.

On October 1, 1946, she was united in marriage to Richard Langenfeld at St. Mary's in Portsmouth. They made their home on the farm near Portsmouth until 1977 when they moved into town. Six children were born to their union: Mary, Jane, Don, John, Allen, and Ann. Suzette was a homemaker and cared for her family while serving her church as sacristan, enjoying her hobbies of quilting and history. She was a member of a quilting club and a member of the Shelby County Historical Society in Harlan, as well as becoming involved in the Widows or Widowers (WOW) group after the death of her husband of forty-five years in July of 1991.

Suzette Langenfeld entered Myrtue Medical Center on November 7, 2006, where she died hours later having attained the age of eighty-one years, ten months, and nineteen days. In addition to her parents, Suzette was preceded in death by her husband Richard, her son Allen, sister Marie Sondag, and brothers Francis, Ted, and Msgr. Joseph Sondag.

Suzette is survived by her children: Mary (Leo) Naujokaitis of Omaha, Nebraska, Jane (John) Parsons of Cave Creek, Arizona, Don (Sandy) Langenfeld of Mt. Prospect, Illinois, John (Kelene) Langenfeld of Omaha, and Ann (Joe) Breedlove of Colorado Springs, Colorado; a brother Rich (Leona) Sondag of Portsmouth, Iowa, and a sister Barbara (Rich) Heller of Portsmouth; twelve grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law Ceil Brown and Joan Sondag, brother-in-law W.G. Langenfeld, nieces, nephews, other family members, and many friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Rev. John Dorton at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, November 13, 2006, at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa. Interment was held at St. Mary's Cemetery in Portsmouth with Philip Langenfeld serving as an honorary casket bearer and Kevin Naujokaitis, Steven Parsons, Alan Naujokaitis, Michael Langenfeld, Justin Langenfeld and Eric Langenfeld serving as casket bearers.
