Hastings, NE - Francis T Sondag was born Oct 6, 1914, in Portsmouth, Iowa to Joseph P and Mary (Hammes) Sondag. He graduated from St Mary's High School, Portsmouth, in 1931. In 1940 he graduated from Iowa State University. He served in the United States Army Air Corp from 1941 through 1946.
Jun 9, 1944, he married Dorothy M Gale and she preceded him in death June 28, 1970. After the war he came back to Clarinda to run a farm implement business until he retired. In 1978 he moved to Lake Worth, FL. In 1996 he moved to Hastings, NE. He was a member of St Cecilia's Catholic Church, Hastings, NE. He was a life member of the American Legion Post #98 in Clarinda. He was an honorary life member Knights of Columbus Council 1479 Shenandoah, and a former member of the Lions in Clarinda. He died at Hastings, NE, Feb 5, 2000, at age 85.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dorothy Sondag; sister, Marie Sondag; and brothers, Monsignor Joseph Sondag and Ted Sondag. He is survived by his son, Robert (Susan) Sondag of Hastings, NE; grandchildren, Christine Sondag, St Louis Park, MN and Elizabeth Sondag, Hastings, NE; sisters, Barbara (Richard) Heller, Portsmouth and Suzette Langenfeld, Portsmouth; brother, Richard (Leona) Sondag, Portsmouth; sister-in-law, Joan Sondag, Portsmouth and nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Feb 9, 2000, at St Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, Portsmouth, with Father Paul Monahan officiating. Burial with military rites were in St Mary's Cemetery,Portsmouth. Butler-Volland Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
