Msgr Joseph Sondag, 43

Msgr Joseph Jacob Sondag, pastor of St Peter's and Paul's parish of Atlantic, was born Aug 26, 1921, at Portsmouth, the son of Mary Hammes and Joseph Sondag. He died Monday, Nov 23, 1964, in a tragic aircraft accident in Rome, Italy, at the age of 43 years, two months and 28 days.

Msgr Sondag attended St Mary's grade and high school at Portsmouth, St Benedicts College, Atchison, Kan, Conception Seminary, Conception, Mo; Ottawa University, Ottawa, Canada. He was ordained a priest Feb 21, 1948, and read his first mass at St Mary's church Feb 24, 1948. He was appointed assistant at St Augustine, Des Moines, before becoming chancellor of the diocese, Aug 31, 1963, he was appointed pastor of St Peters and Paul Parish, Atlantic, IA.

He was a 4th Degree member of Knights of Columbus and 3rd order of St Dominic.

Survivors include his parents, Mr and Mrs Joe Sondag; sisters Marie of Omaha, Mrs Richard Langenfeld, Suzette, and Mrs Richard Heller, Barbara, of Portsmouth; brothers, Francis of Clarinda, Theodore and Richard of Portsmouth; 24 nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held 11 am, Dec 2, 1964, at Atlantic, Ia at St Peter and Paul church. Celebrant of the mass was Rt Rev Msgr W J Devine, Audubon; deacon, Rev Paul F Hans, Guthrie Center; sub-deacon, Rev Bernard C Heese, Cumberland; master of ceremonies, Rev Msgr Edward B Pfeffer, J C L chancellor of the Iowa diocese of Des Moines. Delivering the sermon was Rev Msgr John J MeIlhon of Elkhart, Ia. Burial was in Catholic cemetery in Atlantic.
