Joseph P Sondag Family
Joseph Sondag, son of Theodore and Mary (Korth) Sondag, was born May 12, 1886. Mary Hammes, daughter of Frank and Susan (Ludwig) Hammes, was born January 4, 1891. Joe and Mary were married at St Mary's Church, Portsmouth, Iowa, May 21, 1912. Their parents were some of the early settlers of Cass Township. They were the parents of seven children: Marie (1913); Francis (1914); Theodore (1918); Joseph J (1921-1964); Suzette (1924), married Richard Langenfeld; Richard (1928); and Barbara (1931), married Richard Heller.
Their son, Joseph J was ordained a priest February 21, 1948. He was killed in an airplane crash in Rome in 1964. He is buried in the Atlantic, Iowa cemetery.
Joe and Mary lived on the same farm east of Portsmouth all of their married lives until retiring in 1951. They then moved into Portsmouth. Joe was Cass Township assessor for many years, as well as a trustee of St Mary's Parish. Mary was a teacher in the Portsmouth Public Schools in the early 1900's. Mary passed away in 1971. Joe died in 1973. Their farm is now owned and operated by their son, Richard, and has been in the family for nearly one hundred years.
