ELIZABETH ANN PHEBUS ARNOLD 1819 - 1884

OBITUARY: The Republican (Oakland, Maryland), Sat, 26 Apr 1884 - Page 4

MRS. J. M. ARNOLD

Died, April 17th, 1884, Mrs. J. M. Arnold, who was born September 3rd, 1819, near Lewsistown, Frederick county, MD. She lived in Frederick City from her marriage until April 4th, 1867, when, with her devoted husband, she moved to Oakland, Md/, where she spent the residue of er life.

She died at the residence of her son, F. P. Arnold, on the night of the 17th inst. She was a sufferer for many years, and medical aid was vain, for age together with infirmity had destroyed her constitution. She only awaited the summons.

The deceased was a consistent member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Frederick City, Md., from her early womanhood, until leaving that city. When she and her husband came to Oakland, she became member of the Oakland Evangelical Lutheran Church, in which she was an exemplary member up to her death, although during the several years of her life she was denied the privilege of attending the service of the church on account of declining health.

She was the affectionate mother of a large family of devoted children, most of whom survive her. Her devoted companion with whom she traveled almost the entire journey of her life went to his reward alone, only about four months ago. Since that time her object of living seemed lost, and in her private conversation she spoke of her old home and friends in Frederick, and the joy of meeting them soon. Little did she think of meeting them in the city above, instead of her old home city. But the Lord had decreed that she should first join her beloved husband and they together greet their old friends as they obeyed the holy command of coming up higher into the rest that remaineth for the children of God. Our sad loss is her eternal gain.

May the lord comfort the bereaved hearts of her children and friends. And may they so live in the true faith of Christ their Savior, that when the summons of death shall call them from earth away, they may be reunited as a family never to be separated throughout the long ages of eternity.

Her funeral was from the residence of her son, F. P. Arnold, to the Lutheran Church, thence to the cemetery of the I. O. O. F. The service was by the pastor, Rev. Wm Stoudenmire, assisted by Revs. P. Hamill and M.W. Rider, of the M. E. Church.

Silently her ashes lie beside the remains of her deceased husband awaiting the bright morning of the resurrection, when the Son of Man shell come to awake the sleeping myriads and take them unto the place prepared for them in glory.
