Vernon Sullivan was born February 15, 1932 in Wagoner, OK to Grover Franklin and Velma Mattilou (Cothrun) Sullivan. After high school Vernon served in the U.S. Navy as a 2nd Class Petty Officer and Aviation Metalsmith. After the Navy Vernon attended Muskogee Jr. College.

He married the love of his life, Eunice (Eubanks) on December 17, 1955. They enjoyed life together, both in work and leisure, for 55 years before Eunice’s passing in 2011. They worked at Roger’s Plumbing where Vernon worked in sales and at Baker’s Restaurant. They owned and ran Sullivan’s Restaurant in the 1060’s and 70’s at northwest corner of Cherokee and Casaver Streets. Many former Wagoner students have great memories of going there during the lunch hour to enjoy Vernon’s good cooking and hang out with friends.

After closing the restaurant Vernon and Eunice both returned to college to enter the education field. Vernon earned a Bachelor’s in Education and a Masters in Guidance and Counseling. He was a teacher, school counselor and bus driver for twenty years. While a counselor Vernon was instrumental in starting programs for providing eyeglasses and clothing for students who needed them, and he was known to always have snacks in his office for youngsters who came to school hungry. He and Monica Stuart began the grad night program still active today providing graduating seniors a safe way to celebrate. Later on Vernon returned to school to learn how to do upholstery and began yet another career to add to his many accomplishments.

Vernon was always busy helping others any way he could. He served on the Wagoner School Board for a number of years. He was a devoted member of First United Methodist Church, a member of the Wagoner Masonic Lodge #98, a Shriner, and a member of the Tulsa Scottish Rite. Everyone who knew Vernon knew what a wonderful cook he was. He was known for his peach cobbler, chicken and dumplings, chili, and hot rolls, and Vernon always participated in numerous fund raisers for school, church, or in caring for those who were ill.

Vernon departed this life Sunday, April 9, 2017 at Saint Francis Heart Hospital in Tulsa, OK.
