Agnes married William Otto Theodore "Bill" Petersen on March 17, 1946. They are the parents of Terry, Darrel & Karen.

Agnes Sophia Petersen was born on December 20, 1921 to Carl & Ella (Beers) Halvorsen in rural Otoe County.

She passed away April 08, 2017 at the Syracuse Good Samaritan Center at the age of 95 years, 3 months and 19 days.

Agnes was part of the first class to graduate at the "new" Syracuse High School in 1939.

She worked as a telephone operator in Syracuse until entering the Lincoln School of Commerce and working in Lincoln as a purchasing agent. While working as a telephone operator she met William Petersen, the brother of one of her fellow operators. They dated until he went into the service in 1942. As he left, he asked her to wait for him. They were married on March 17, 1946.

She worked at Bill's side as they farmed near Elmwood in a house with no running water.

They later moved to a farm south of Syracuse where they raised three children: Terry, Darrel and Karen.

In the mid-1960s Agnes took a job as cook's helper at the new Good Samaritan Center in Syracuse.

Later she became City Clerk of Syracuse and continued in that position until her retirement in 1987.

She was a leader in 4-H and of the Jolly Neighbors club.

She was active in the Syracuse United Methodist Church, belonging to the church choir, teaching Sunday School and UMW as well as the quilting group.

Agnes is survived by her sons Terry (Janet) Petersen of Fort Madison, IA, Darrel (Debbie) of Sioux Falls, SD and daughter Karen (Harry) Heafer of Lincoln, NE., 5 grandchildren Ashley (Shane) Jacobs, Erin Reitsma, Eric (Samantha) Petersen, William (Simone) Heafer and Bailey (Mark) Feit, 5 great-grandchildren, sister Violet Whiteaker of Kansas City, MO and brother Robert Halvorsen of Lincoln, NE.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Bill, her parents, sisters Irene Petersen and Esther Rosenthal and brothers Forrest Halvorsen and Marshall Halvorsen.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 11 at 10:30 A.M. at St. John's United Church of Christ in Syracuse.

Burial will be at Park Hill cemetery.

Visitation will be on Monday, April 10 from 9 A.M. until 9 P.M. with family greeting friends from 5-7 P.M. at the funeral home.
