Inez P. Deters

ONALASKA - Inez P. Deters, 85, of Onalaska passed away peacefully Saturday Aug. 23, 2008, at Sterling House in Onalaska.

She was born Oct. 28, 1922, to Ora and Mary (Peters) Abbott in Monroe County. Inez married Raymond Carpenter, and they later divorced.

She later married Joseph Deters. They lived in Madison, where Inez worked for Central Colony before buying and operating a bar and restaurant in Sauk City, Wis.

Joe and Inez moved the family to the Onalaska area in 1971. Inez worked over the years for the VA Hospital in Tomah, and then at Fort McCoy before retiring from the government in 1978. For approximately

22 years, she worked for several companies providing in-home care.

Inez was the consummate caregiver.

Inez is survived by her children, Don (Ann) Carpenter of La Crosse, Kay (Harold) Finley of Onalaska, Bruce Carpenter of Rensselaer, Ind., Bill (Peggy) Carpenter of Stoughton, Wis., Erv (Kim) Carpenter of Dodgeville, Wis., David Deters of La Crosse, and Thomas Deters of Onalaska; 24 grandchildren; and 44 great-grandchildren.

Inez is further survived by her sisters, Calvera Cone of Sparta, June Goodenough, Sharon Edmison and LaVonne Shawley of Cataract, and Anna Mae Pollack of Angelo; and a brother, Warren Abbott of Silver Springs, Nev.

She was preceded in death by her father, Ora Abbott; mother Mary Fritz; brothers, Ben, Bernie, Byron, Bill, Basil and Spencer; and sister, Etta Taholski; by Ray Carpenter; husband, Joseph Deters; and son, Robert Deters.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28, at Fossum Funeral Home, 510 Second Ave S., Onalaska. The Rev. Daniel L. Henderson will officiate. Burial will follow in Cataract Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. and again on Thursday from 9 a.m. until the time of the services.
