He is preceded in death by his wife of fifty-eight years, Betty Ruth Wilder Mathews; his parents, Lawrence and Rosa Michiels Mathews; five brothers, Huey Mathews, Tom Mathews, O’Hearn Mathews, Charles Mathews, and John Mathews; and four sisters Oralee VanHoof, Inez Jeansonne, Delores Perkins, and Myrthlee VanHoof.
Alfred was born on December 1, 1930 on Bayou Rapides. He attended St. Francis Xavier Cathedral Grammar School and Menard Memorial High School. He worked for French Unique Cleaners with his brothers Charles and Tom. Later he drove a special education school bus for Rapides Parish until his retirement in 1993. He volunteered for St. Rita Catholic Church driving children to daily Mass from school at the air base to church. He had a special place in his heart for the children at St. Mary’s Training School.
He was a charter member of St. Rita Catholic Church, a member of the Amicus Club, Knights of Columbus Council 1134, Msgr. Pigay Assembly 328, Belgian American Club, St. Rita Wise Crackers, and served on the board of St. Rita Credit Union.
He is survived by his children: Alfred Louis Mathews, Jr. and his wife Judy, Tammie Woodington and her husband, Ryon, and Cynthia Ann Sayes and her husband Kenneth Paul; seven grandchildren: Erica Lauren Ware Hinds, Justin Mathew Ware, Ross Alfred Mathews, Paul Lawrence Mathews, Jennifer Mathews Keeton, Lauren Sayes Davis, and Kathryn Marie Sayes ; one great grandchild, Nolan Mathew Hinds; a sister, Shirley Brouillette and her husband “Nap”, his sister-in-law, Helen Mathews Smart; and his dear friend, Pat Lohman.
