A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Mrs. Betty Ruth Wilder Mathews at 10 a.m. on Monday, February 18, 2013 in St. Rita Catholic Church with Rev. Craig Scott officiating. Interment will follow in Alexandria Memorial Gardens under the direction of John Kramer & Son Funeral Home.

Visitation will be held from 4:30 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, February 17, 2013, and again on Monday from 8 to 9:30 a.m., at the funeral home. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Betty Ruth Wilder Mathews, age 79, of Alexandria, passed away Friday, February 15, 2013 in her residence.

She is preceded in death by her parents Herbert and Marie (Buckner) Wilder; her brother H. L. Wilder Jr., and her dear Aunt and Uncle Kathleen and Beverly Eversull.

Betty started her working career before her marriage as an operator at Western Union. After marrying Alfred L. Mathews she was a stay at home mom, devoted to her children. She loved family gatherings and being with friends, especially outdoors. Once her children were grown, she worked at Huffman Mercantile and then at the City of Alexandria in the Utility Department until retiring after 16 years of continuous service. Betty Ruth was strong in her faith and credits that to Msgr. Joseph M Susi who converted her to the Catholic faith and remained dear to her heart throughout her life. After her conversion she became a member of St. Rita Catholic Church, where she and Alfred married and raised their family to hold strong to their Christian values. Throughout her life Betty Ruth was a member of several organizations including St. Rita PTA, Our Lady of Prompt Succor Ladies Bowling Team, served as a board member of the St. Rita Credit Union and was a founding member of the Amicus Club.

She is survived by her loving husband and soul mate of 58 years, Alfred Louis Mathews, Sr.; her children: Alfred Louis Mathews, Jr. and wife Judy Titmus of Alexandria, Tammie Marie Ware and her fiancé Ryon Woodington of Alexandria, and Cynthia Ann Sayes and husband Kenneth Paul of Woodworth; seven grandchildren: Erica Lauren Ware Hinds and husband Dustin of Broussard, Justin Mathew Ware, Ross Alfred Mathews, Jennifer Ann Mathews and Paul Lawrence Mathews all of Alexandria, Lauren Ashley Sayes and Kathryn Marie Sayes of Woodworth; three sisters Evelyn Wilder, Jackie Cohenour, and Kathleen Wilder all of Alexandria; one brother Charles H. Wilder and wife Mary Cecile of Alexandria, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers honored to serve are Justin Ware, Ross Mathews, Paul Mathews, Gary Mathews, Keith Perkins, and Jerry Brouillette. Honorary Pallbearer serving will be Lynn Mathews.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to her sitters Rae Neff, Dorothy Underwood and Willie Mae Forest. They would also like to thank Compassionate Care Home Health for their loving care.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made in honor of Mrs. Betty Ruth Mathews to the St. Rita Church Building Fund at 3822 Bayou Rapides Rd, Alexandria, LA 71303 or to St. Mary's Residential Training School at 6715 Hwy 1 North, Alexandria, LA 71301.
